Villiera Monro Merlot 2021

R390.00

Monro Merlot is Villiera’s Reserve red bottled under the historic family name “Monro”. It was the obvious choice of brand as it symbolises the dedication and heritage that are hallmarks of this wine. This wine is designed to appeal to the consumer looking for greater complexity, terroir character and longevity. From 2016 onwards has been made exclusively from Merlot to highlight the potential for Merlot in these conditions.

Optimally ripe Merlot was hand-harvested from selected blocks of old vines and the low yields ensure concentration. The healthy fruit was destalked with only 70% being crushed and the balance remained in the form of whole berries.

Both the pumpover and punchdown systems were used for extraction purposes and a portion was taken through to the final blending stage without the use of preservative. After pressing, the wine was racked to French oak barrels (65% new) for malolactic fermentation and maturation. After two barrel rackings and 18 months the wine was blended and bottled.

Intensely aromatic with forthcoming berry fruit and hints of chocolate, spice and vanilla. It is well-balanced with velvety texture but with enough grip to ensure good length. The complexity will ensure that Monro Merlot should keep for up to 10 years.

Description

Cousins Jeff and Simon Grier started the family-owned Villiera Wines outside Stellenbosch in 1983 and embarked on an extensive replanting of classic and local varietals.

Cathy Brewer (née Grier) later joined the family team to head up the sales, marketing and export divisions. The introduction of hi-tech cellar facilities for the production of still wines as well as Cap Classique combined with a unique wine business philosophy has seen Villiera developing into one of the largest private wineries in the country.
