Van Loggerenberg Break a Leg Merlot 2023

R182.00

65% of this wine is from a vineyard in the Stellenbosch Kloof Valley planted on rich decomposed granite soils with koffieklip in the top layer of soil. The remaining 35% is from a vineyard planted in Devon Valley in Stellenbosch. This area is known for its clay rich soils which produces wines with great structure.

100% Merlot. All grapes were destemmed, and fermented naturally, with one long pump over daily for 2 weeks. The fermented grapes were lightly pressed, and the wine went through malolactic fermentation in 3rd fill French barriques. After that the wines were racked and returned to barrel for ageing. No enzymes or comercial yeast is used in the winemaking process.

Description

The mountainous outline of the Helderberg mountain is shown here – the site of the Merlot vineyards. The acorn with its amber leaf makes a nod to Stellenbosch – the best site for merlot in the country, according to the winemaker. The Kudu is a reference to a love of hunting, while also suggesting a dream pairing of venison with soft, elegant red wines. The dung beetle symbolizes working hard and not stopping before you achieve your mission in life. The colour of the label is autumnal and reflects the beauty of Stellenbosch in the growing season.

As the name suggests, Lukas had to undergo 2 big knee surgeries in the first harvest season as is shown by the leg in a brace on the label and the silhouette of the man plotting his next move. With the help of great friends and family it all came together in the end and this wine is a celebration of hard times that you have to overcome and to never give up. In the same way one wishes a performer to “break a leg” the name celebrates all the hard work put in to achieve our goals.
