A blend of 36% Tempranillo, 24% Alicante Bouschet, 18% Touriga Nacional, 8% Pontac, 7% Souzao, 7% Touriga Franca
Tempranillo is sourced from shale soil found along the Berg River in Wellington. The Alicante Bouschet grapes and small parcels of Touriga Nacional, Souzao and Touriga Francesa are from the foothills of Stellencosch mountain. Deep red, well-drained soils of shale and sandstone buffer these vines from extreme conditions.
The components of this wine are vinified seperately. All are fermented naturally in open top fermentors, with some whole bunch fermentation. After gentle pressing the wine matured in 2nd and 3rd fill French oak for 11 months prior to blending and bottling.
Inky black with aromas of blackberry and blueberries with intense cinnamon and savoury spices, and black pepper on the nose. The palate is more-ish, brimming with berry flavours and robust tannins.

Thistle and Weed was created in 2015 by winemaker Stephanie Wiid and viticulturist Etienne Terblanche. These Young Gunners first burst onto the scene with their maiden-release 2016 Thistle & Weed Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc which garnered a Platter’s 5 star. They produce artisan wines, focusing primarily on Chenin Blanc, and their grapes are sourced from organic and responsibly farmed vineyards from different parts of the Cape.
“Night falls and Nastergal (Solanum nigrum) blooms, its berries ripen to inky purple. This one-ofa-kind red blend merges a host of dark-fleshed Iberian varieties in pursuit of a wine as dark as Black Nightshade. A dark, broody blend from the Cape.” – Thistle & Weed
