This blend of 71% Chenin Blanc, 26% Verdelho and 3% Viognier started it all for Rall Wines back in 2008. It is now already in its 16th vintage, and remains the cornerstone of what they do. No other wine in the portfolio has achieved the level of consistency year on year over the last decade or so, and this 2023 vintage is no different. The grapes are still mainly grown in the ancient granitic soils of the Paardeberg, and now also contains a big portion of fruit from the oldest vineyard they work with, planted in 1969. All components are fermented naturally and matured separately in a combination of 2000L Foudre, seasoned small French oak, concrete eggs and amphora before blending and bottling after 10 months with minimal filtration.
“Even after seven consecutive 5 star Platters ratings, this wine I believe is another step up.” – Donovan’s notes

Gentle giant Donovan Rall is very well-travelled as a winemaker, but found his inspiration in the Mediterranean varieties in the Swartland. After graduating with a Viticulture and Oenology degree from Stellenbosch University in 2005 and extensive travels and harvests in other regions, Donovan returned to South Africa in 2007 for a season in the Swartland. Here he worked on his dream of making unique and natural-styled wines under his own label, a small batch range “never more than 1000 cases tops” from good fruit from some of the oldest vineyards in Swartland and Stellenbosch. He started with Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Verdelho and Viognier for a white blend, and Syrah, Mouvedre and Grenache for his red blend, but now also make some single varietal wines. The winemaking is simple, with each parcel allowed to ferment and mature naturally before blending. The wines are full of character and complexity, mark our words these are future classics.
