Newton Johnson Windansea Pinot Noir 2023

R878.00

A lavish wine with dense fruit, soft spice and violets in cooler years. The lush black and red fruits merge to a savoury core, strewn with mineral characters and freshly turned earth. The firm framework and granular tannins are rooted in the clay soil, lengthened by fine, sinewy tannins in the finish. Utilizing whole bunches and stems enhances the acidity and spiciness, creating a well-aligned tannin structure.

Description

Windansea spans 2.5 hectares and is situated at the highest point of the slope, just before encountering shallow bedrock and the mountainside behind the winery. The shallow, dense clay beneath the surface significantly contributes to the vineyard’s muscular structure and presence. With stunning views of the sea, this site is also the most exposed to wind, which helps control the vigor of growth. The thicker skins of the berries yield deeper, darker tones. The persistent tang of red and black fruit is prominent, yet it is the firm body and backbone that truly define the wine from this vineyard. The roots penetrate early into the heavy clay, allowing even the young vines to express these characteristics.

Since the first Pinot Noir vineyards were planted on the Newton Johnson farm in 2003, it has been recognized that years would be needed for these vines to establish themselves and express their terroir. As each season has passed, the vines have matured, leading to evolving perceptions and expectations. Some have reached their peak, while others have exceeded initial hopes. The authenticity and consistency demonstrated by the Seadragon and Windansea vineyards have established them as the premier growth sites, showcasing their maturity, complexity, and distinct expression in every cuvée.
