Glenelly Estate Reserve Red 2017

R387.00

64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 12% Syrah, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The grapes were hand-sorted and gently crushed into stainless steel fermentation tanks. After a cold soak of three days, natural fermentation was allowed to begin. During fermentation, the grapes were pumped over three times daily, followed by an extended skin contact period of 2-3 weeks. The wine was then transferred to French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aged for 18 months, with racking occurring approximately every four months.

The wine reveals deep aromas of cassis and mulberry, complemented by notes of cedar and tobacco, with Cabernet forming the core of the blend. On the palate, vibrant red and black cherries are enhanced by a subtle touch of black pepper, showcasing the Syrah’s influence. Rich fruit flavors are layered with mocha, Christmas cake, sandalwood, and leather, adding complexity. The wine’s lively acidity is balanced by firm tannins, leading to a clean, dry finish that promises great aging potential.

Description

Glenelly Estate Reserve is the flagship red blend of the estate, inspired by the classic Claret blend of the 1700s. The growing season began with a late winter, but cold enough to allow the vines to enter dormancy. Low rainfall resulted in reduced soil moisture, requiring careful stress management later in the season through drip irrigation. Spring brought a healthy, even bud burst. The season was warm, with little rain, which led to smaller berries and lower bunch mass. Although there were more bunches on the vines, the yield was still larger than in previous years, and the harvest came earlier than usual.
