Monmarthe Secret de Famille

R837.00

The Monmarthe Ludes Premier Cru, ‘Secret de Famille’ Brut NV is a mighty introduction to the points of difference offered by the Grower Champagne category.

A blend of three vintages, composed of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay. The base wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks to maintain fruit purity, before secondary fermentation in the bottle, where it spends a minimum of 2 years on the fine lees ahead of disgorgement.

A dosage of 9 g/l receives the classification of Brut. A light copper hue in colour, with aromas of white peach, citrus, lightly honeyed orange zest and brioche. The palate is fleshy, with a playful mousse and vinous length, underpinned by a good acid line for balance.

Description

Based in the Premier Cru classified villages of Ludes, on the north slopes of the Montagne de Reims, the Monmarthe family have been growing grapes since 1737. In 1931, they took the decision to stop selling to bigger brands and produce their own set of Champagne.

At the helm today are Jean-Guy Monmarthe and his son Gauthier, tending to 15ha of vines within Ludes. They employ sustainable farming, via an HEV (High Environmental Value) certification since 2014, and are a member of ‘The Vigneron Independent’.

The house cuvee of ‘Secret de Famille’ represents around 90% of production, whilst they also produce highly limited wines under their ‘terroir selection’, from single vineyards and in single vintages.
