Laherte Frères Ultradition Extra Brut

R1,203.00

Aurélien Laherte’s Ultradition is a blend of 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir from eight villages in the Côteaux Sud d’Épernay and Vallée De La Marne, grown ecologically on limestone soils.

The base wine is vinified in large format foudres, tanks and oak barrels, with partial malolactic fermentation. The assemblage includes 40% reserve wines aged in barrel, and the wine matures for 6 months on fine lees in the bottle before disgorgement. It presents a pale straw color with a lacy white mousse and a delicate yet persistent bead. Aromas of yeast, baked bread, citrus, oily toast and almonds are captivating. The palate is vividly sculptured, combining tension, intensity, and richness with citrusy, yeasty lees and toasty baked bread flavors, ending with a stimulating finish of subtle cashew and chalky minerality. It concludes long and refined with a chiseled feel. Drink over the next 4-5 years.

Description

Based in Chavot-Courcourt, just south of Epernay, the wines of Laherte Frères encompass so many of the dimensions that make Champagne such a dynamic region today. At the helm is Aurélien Laherte, easily one of the most progressive young growers of his generation.

Sustainable and regenerative farming in various guises and low-intervention winemaking are some of their signatures. Each wine has a sense of purpose. Some are explorations of a single grape, others exalt the qualities of small parcels and some wines showcase the principles of blending.

There’s a stylistic thread running through the range. Vinous richness, vitality and transparency, all enhanced by aging in neutral oak, low dosage and smart use of partial malolactic fermentation and bâtonnage.
