Saturday Sipping Session – Joostenberg & Vuurberg Wines

December 7, 2024 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free

Joostenberg, a historic wine farm in the Muldersvlei district of Stellenbosch, traces its roots back to the late 1600s when established by a Swedish settler. The estate features a beautifully preserved Cape Dutch manor house from 1756, recognised as a national monument. The Myburgh family has owned Joostenberg since 1879, reviving winemaking traditions in 1999 after a long hiatus. Today, as a 5th-generation family business, Joostenberg focuses on producing an exclusive range of wines, particularly Chenin Blanc and Syrah, with a commitment to natural winemaking and organic practices — achieving full organic certification in 2012.

Vuurberg Wines – Production by Donovan Rall is small and the wines are unapologetically bold without being overly heroic. Blending different cultivars from different areas, partnered with judicious use of new oak, gives the wines complexity and a sense of luxuriousness, both on the nose and on the palate. Importantly, Donovan manages to create balanced wines, even at the fuller-bodied end of the spectrum. Very classy multi-regional wines in the best tradition of the “new” world. The property is owned by Dutchman Sebastiaan Klaassen who spends part of each year on the property. The Vuurberg Farm is situtated in Stellenbosch on the east-facing slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, on the Franschhoek side of the Helshoogte Pass.
