Saturday Sipping Session – Eenzaamheid Wines

September 16, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free

This is an amazing farm that has been around for 320 years in Agter-Paarl. In Dutch, the name means “solitude”, and is a reference to the property’s isolation from Cape Town when the farm was named in 1693 – a time when a journey of 60km required a good horse if the rider wanted to arrive within a day.

A shortage of grain, fresh fruit and vegetables in the Cape obliged the governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, to allocate small farms to officials and soldiers of the Dutch East India Company.

In 1693, Claas Dippenauw became the first owner of what was then a 60-morgen farm, and called it Eenzaamheid. After his death in 1715, his widow, Sara Tas, inherited the farm and later sold it to her brother, Adam Tas. Now there’s a name you might have heard before. Enough of the history lesson, but if you’re interested in more, it’s all beautifully written up on the farm’s website.

Janno Briers-Louw is the current custodian of Eenzaamheid, where he produces award winning wines from old dryland vineyards. He is the first of his family to produce wines under the farm’s own name with the first vintage in 2010. Prior to that all grapes were sold to cooperatives and other producers like Fairview and Perdeberg. Janno became a Cape Wine Master in 2016 and with that confirmed his love for all things viti and vini.

Join us to taste a selection of wines, including the award winning Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.
