Bruwer Raats founded Raats Family Wines in 2000, and since then has narrowed his focus on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. He believed that specialising would lead to success, and this belief was not unfounded, as today, Raats Family Wines is regarded as a leader of South African with these two varieties. The focus is even narrowed to not only the two varieties, but specifically vineyards growing in the granite and dolomite hills of Polkadraai.
The Eden High Density Single Vineyard Project originated from a deep passion for mastering Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc. In 2004 Bruwer fell in love with a small piece of land in Polkadraai Hills Stellenbosch, called Eden, realising the potential of this tiny pocket of neglected pure decomposed dolomite granite. The Eden vineyard was created with extreme precision viticulture as a key focus, and the results are clear. With 8000 vines per hectare, they planted only 0,6 hectares of Chenin Blanc and 0,2 hectares of Cabernet Franc.
Bruwer is visiting us to not only unpack Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc from Polkadraai, but more specifically to give us the first taste of the new Eden Vineyard releases.
