Lourens Family Wines release with Franco Lourens

Franco Lourens really is one of our rising stars, with a relatively small production still at this stage.

Howard John red blend, named after his dad, was the start of it all in 2016. He was still working for David Finlayson at the time, making the Edgebaston wines. He managed to land himself a job working with Chris Alheit and this is where Chris helped him to refine his talent and learn more about the old vineyards and how to work with them. The intention was always to go solo completely at some stage and this all happened in 2021 when he left Chris, moved into the cellar where Lukas van Loggerenberg makes his wines, and now focusses on growing the brand.

Howard John is a blend of Grenache, Cinsaut and Syrah. The wine has changed over the years as he is striving to find the perfect balance, with Grenache taking the lead now and I believe that’s how it will always be. There’s a freshness in the wildness. Bright cherry, darker spice, olive brine and dried herbs.

Lindi Carien is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Colombar, Grenache Blanc and a touch of Palomino. Grapes are sourced from various vineyards from Piekenierskloof to Stellenbosch. Finding all the building blocks for the wine he’s striving to make. Savoury and kelp, almonds and spice, apple skin and horseradish. It has an amazing tight saline note, almost like seaspray and a rounded mouthfeel at the same time.

These two wines form the backbone and will grow steadily over time as he manages to find vineyards he can and wants to work with. He says there’s no rush really. It’s all about the correct sites and grapes.

The single vineyard Chenin Blanc, called Skuinskap, which goes into Lindi Carien, but he bottles some separately as it’s just so good. It’s from a beautiful trellised old vineyard in Piekenierskloof. Tangerine, fynbos floral, baking spice, cooked apple and a beautiful tight finish.

My favourite at the moment for the sheer drinking pleasure it provides is Lua Ilse Grenache Noir from Piekenierskloof. Elegant and perfumed. Ginger biscuits and wild cranberry. Orange rind, carrot cake spice and delicate berries. Just so gorgeous.

Join us for a tutored tasting with Franco of his new releases as well as a look back at some older wines
