David Nieuwoudt is what we call a”Duracell bunny” There is no end to his energy, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaboration ideas and ultimately all of it results in really hard work to make the best wines possible from select sites. Cederberg is a name synonymous with beautiful rugged mountains, but how many people have actually visited this oasis in the heart of it all. Yes, it gets hot there, but the diurnal shift in the “valley” between the high mountains, makes it a lot cooler at night than many other grape growing areas in SA, and there’s a river that runs through it of course.
Cederberg is one of the only farms to install wind turbines to create air movement against frost at night. Burning tires or candles like you see being done in other parts of the world, is very risky when you’re surrounded by mountains and nature. These turbines switch on automatically when the temperatures drop below a certain point.
We’ve included a little video for you, taken by Corlien on a visit during harvest 2022.
David also makes wine from vineyards in Piekenierskloof, Elim and as far afield as Chile.
