John and Karen Loubser started Silverthorn wines on the banks of the Breede River, near Bonnievale more than two decades ago. Karen’s dad had a vision, a dream, when he purchased this 11 hectare property in the ’70s. But it took another 20 years before this dream could be reborn through his daughter. John was assistant winemaker at Graham Beck in 1999 when they took over the runnings of this beautiful farm. A far cry from the successful Cap Classique producing property it is today. John joined Steenberg in 2001 and during the 17 years as winemaker and general manager, he was allowed to also build his own brand and dream on the side. Thus Silverthorn wines was born and now over two decades into the journey, Silverthorn Wines has truly established itself as a world-class Cap Classique brand and destination.
Join us as we take an in-depth look at Cap Classique through the wines of Silverthorn with John.
We shall be tasting individual blending components, Cap Classique in its various phases of development, like fresh base wine from 2024, “dirty” examples of wine still on lees in bottle, recently disgorged wines, and of course we’ll look at older vintages too.
Tasting and learning about Cap Classique doesn’t get much better than this.
John is a true master of his craft and we are looking forward to sharing this amazing experience with you.
The exact wines to be tasted on the night will remain a mystery for now. John is a philosophical man, and picking his favourite children to showcase cannot be an easy task.
This tasting will be presented in a tutored format, therefore reserving your seats is essential.
We’ll serve some light snacks from 5:30pm with the tasting starting promptly at 6pm.
