Boekenhoutskloof is not only one of Franschhoek’s best-known and celebrated wineries, it is proudly considered one of the best producers of quality wine in South Africa.
Voted “Winery of the Year” in the Platters Wine Guide for 2020, Gottfried Mocke was named winemaker of the year by Tim Atkin in 2020, and in 2022 received 99 points for the Semillon 2020 and thus white wine of the year. The list of accolades doesn’t stop there, Syrah 2020 received 97 points, and both Cabernet Sauvignon received 95 points.
Join Gottfried Mocke as we taste the 2020 and 2013 vintage of all these wines.
There is a strong focus on Syrah in the cellar, with grapes grown on their two properties in the Swartland, namely Porseleinberg and Goldmine.
Two Cabernet Sauvignons are produced, showcasing the difference between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek fruit. Stellenbosch grapes are from Helderberg and Polkadraai, whereas the Franschhoek fruit is from their own property. A small portion of Cabernet Franc forms part of the final blend and both these varieties have been farmed organically for 12 years to date.
Semillon is arguably the darling grape from Franschhoek, where some of the oldest vineyards on record is found. The grapes for this wine is from 3 Old Vine Certified vineyards, planted in 1902, 1942 and the third vineyard planted in 1936 includes some Semillon Gris vines. A small portion of Muscat d’Alexandrie from an 1902 vineyard is added to lift the aromatic profile.
