SAGA Vineyards just released their new vintage and we are fortunate to have winemaker Reenen Borman to present the new wines personally.

SAGA is all about finding remarkable sites, often in unexpected places, to grow fascinating wines. Wines that represent not just stories, but epic tales of adventure, persistence and survival. The people behind it is Henk Kotze, Fritz Schoon and Reenen Borman. Between a baker and a businessman opening the first boutique wine store in the heart of Stellenbosch in 2011, Hawk & Schoon, and Reenen, one of the most naturally talented winemakers in South Africa, the energy and passion for exploration is next level.

The best known of the four wines is the Sons of Sugarland Syrah, that has built up a following and an annual release date frenzy. A pure expression of Syrah, involving whole bunch fermentation and ageing in concrete only. The second brother that was added to the Sons family is a Barbera from the Breedekloof, following the same winemaking philosophy.
On its heals is Patatsfontein Steen, the Chenin Blanc from the remote mountains outside Montague and produced in rather small volumes due to the low yields of this special vineyard. The little sister from the same farm, Wit Versnit, sees the addition of Colombard, adding a bit of extra stonefruit flavours. Both wines are made in old oak barrels and concrete, preserving the sense of place.

Taste the newly released 2023 wines with Reenen, and if we’re lucky we’ll also look at an older vintage or two.

In addition we have the special opportunity to get a pre-release look at the famous Boschkloof Epilogue 2022.  This wine needs very little introduction, but what we can say is that it leads the way for Syrah in Stellenbosch from this remarkable farm and truly talented winemaker.
