Van Niekerk Vintners Rebellie 2022

R308.00

45% wholebunch, naturally fermented Grenache Noir from Botriver, matured in old oak barrels for 10 months before bottling. This wine has an aromatic, perfumed nose with a hint of white pepper and spice. A fresh red berry acidity on the palate, complemented by a layered and engaging mouthfeel. This wine is bright, light and beautiful.

Grapes were sourced from two neighbouring farms on the Swart River road just outside of Botriver. The first pick was from a new block on a farm called Nabot and the second pick from the dryland bush vine block on the Anysbos farm.

Description

In 1671 the first van Niekerk set foot in the Cape of Good Hope. Cornelis van Niekerk, an 11-year-old Dutch boy, arrived with nothing more than the clothes on his back. Years later, now a prosperous farmer, Cornelis and eight others took a stance against the Cape’s corrupt governor by refusing to sell their wine to the dishonest regime. Instead, they sold directly to passing ships at a much fairer price. This landed them in a Mauritian jail where Cornelis passed away – unjustly branded as one of “The 9 Rebellious Vrijboeren”.
His two sons picked up the pieces, and through them the Van Niekerk family legacy continued.
