Coterie by Wildeberg – Cabernet Franc Malbec 2023

R210.00

Coterie by Wildeberg is crafted with a focus on expressing the unique characteristics of the finest vineyards from Franschhoek and the Coastal Region. Each vintage begins with hand-harvested fruit from carefully selected sites in Franschhoek and Paarl. The wine is made using a whole-bunch fermentation method, with no crushing—only a daily pump-over during natural fermentation to allow for slow, gentle extraction. This approach ensures a pure reflection of the terroir rather than the influence of the winery. After fermentation, the wine matures in a mix of new and used French and Austrian oak barrels for 20 months before the final blend is selected. It is then allowed to marry for six weeks before bottling on the estate.

Consisting of 67 % Cabernet Franc and 33% Malbec. The wine opens with an inviting nose of crushed red fruits, complemented by delicate aromas of redcurrant, wild plum, and subtle herbal notes. Hints of cloves and star anise add complexity. On the palate, the wine is plush and full-bodied, with ripe black fruit flavors, a savoury mid-palate, and nuanced, lightly spicy oak. The juicy acidity keeps the wine lively, while fine tannins lead to a bold, muscular finish. This wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, especially lamb, as well as spiced meat dishes.

Description

Franschoek has been an established wine region for some 350 years, sensible generations never thought to plant a vine on this particular site until a happy band of idealists recently craned their necks up at this hillside and, dizzy with hope, decided to give it a go.

The Wildeberg wines express the most captivating Franschhoek Valley fruit. In their Wildeberg Terroirs bottlings they look beyond their home to a clutch of exceptional sites of other origin.

The farm’s compact barrel hall is busily bubbling away with wild ferments whilst a small winery will form the next evolutionary phase. They have sublime accommodation for guests and arguably the most dramatically-appointed tasting room in the hemisphere.

The Coterie wines draw upon a convergence of Wildeberg’s tiny production pool of identified vineyards. Made with Wildeberg’s cornerstone philosophies of minimal intervention winemaking, wild ferment and coarse filtration to capture the essence of the source vineyards and soils.
