Made by Donovan Rall, this wine is unapologetically bold without being overly heroic. Blending different cultivars from different areas, partnered with judicious use of new oak, gives the wines complexity and a sense of luxuriousness, both on the nose and on the palate.
A blend of 48% Petit Verdot from Vuurberg and Bottelary; 28% Cabernet Sauvignon from Vuurberg with a mixture of clones on the rockiest part of the slope, facing Jonkershoek Mountains, and 24% Cinsault from Swartland.
50% of the Cinsault is wholebunch fermented; everything else is double sorted and destemmed. 18 months in 225L 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels wihtout fining or filtering. 18 months in bottle before release.
Donovan says, “More Petit Verdot was used as it is the wine in that vintage. Everyone in Banghoek’s best wine is probably the Petit Verdot, but interestingly no one bottles it alone. Sometimes Zorgvliet does, and then it is by far their best wine.”
