Kanonkop is more than just a farm, it’s a wine estate that runs on family values and a deep history in the wine industry of South Africa. One of the first estates to stand on their own and move away from the cooperative systems of the past. The first wines bearing the Kanonkop label was produced in 1973, making 2023 the 50th vintage produced under this name. The 4th generation family-owned estate is currently under custodianship of brothers Paul and Johann Krige and the age old traditions are being preserved carefully, whilst keeping ahead of the curve to constantly produce world class wines from Stellenbosch.
Abrie Beeslaar is the cellarmaster at Kanonkop since 2003 and responsible for crafting exceptional world class wines. Named Winemaker of the year a remarkable 3 times, 2008, 2015 and 2017 by the International Wine and Spirits Competition. In more recent years, Kanonkop expanded their land ownership by buying the neighbouring Laibach farm, now renamed Ladybird Vineyards. One of the first organic farms in Stellenbosch and a source of grapes for Kanonkop for some years already. With this, winemaker Francois Van Zyl joined the team, making the winemaking powerhouse even stronger.
Francois Van Zyl will be joining us for this tasting to showcase the current Kanonkop and Ladybird wines. We’re in for a treat as usual with some older vintages being showcased on the night as well.
