This is the first Albariño produced in South Africa, crafted by the Newton Johnson family after importing the vine material to the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The grape, originating from the cool, wet Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal, was historically brought to the region by monks from the Rhine River. The vineyards, situated on north and south-facing slopes at altitudes of 250-300 meters in porphyritic granite soils, benefit from the maritime climate, which features cooling southerly winds and regular sea mists. This environment fosters the grape’s floral complexity, reminiscent of Riesling, and allows for a unique expression in the wine. The region receives an annual rainfall of 850mm, with half of it occurring during the winter months.
